2023 MALAWI SCHOOL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (MSCE) EXAMINATION RESULTS

The Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) in conjunction with the Ministry of Education has released the 2023 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination results.

Candidates are awarded a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MsCE), if they satisfy one of the following conditions :

Either :

  • Obtain a pass in six subjects including English, with a credit pass in at least one of them
  • Obtain a pass in five subjects, including English, with a credit pass in at least three of them

Results Statistics

Out of 154,132 candidates that sat for this examination, 83,846 have passed. This represents an overall pass rate of 54.40%.

  • Out of 72,056 female candidates that sat for this examination, 34,721 have passed. This represents 48.15% pass rate.
  • Out of 82,076 male candidates that sat for this examination, 49,125 have passed. This represents 59.85% pass rate.
  • Out of 531 Special Needs Education (SNE) candidates that sat for this examination, 305 have passed. This represents 57.44% pass rate.
  • Out of 273 male SNE candidates that sat for this examination, 160 have passed. This represents 58.61% pass rate.
  • Out of 258 female SNE candidates that sat for this examination, 145 have passed. This represents 56.20% pass rate.
  • Out of 96,558 internal candidates that sat for this examination, 52,202 have passed. This represents 58.21% pass rate.
  • Out of 18,747 external candidates that sat for this examination, 7,878 have passed. This represents 42.02% pass rate.
  • Out of 38,827 ODL candidates that sat for this examination, 19,766 have passed. This represents 50.91% pass rate.
  • Out of 39,957 candidates that sat for the examination at Conventional Secondary schools 27,193 have passed. This represents 68.06% pass rate.
  • Out of 76,972 candidates that sat for the examination at Community Day Secondary schools 35,046 have passed. This represents 45.53% passr rate.
  • Out of 37,203 candidates that sat for the examination at Private Secondary schools, 21,607 have passed. This represents 58.08% pass rate.

The top ten (10) performing education districts, in descending order are :

Dedza (62.65%), Zomba Urban (62.46%), Chitipa (61.42%), Karonga (61.41%), Dowa (61.02%), Mzuzu City (60.49%), Phalombe (58.95%, Nkhotakota (57.84%), Mulanje (56.98%) and Likoma (56.93%).

The bottom ten (10) education districts, in ascending order are :

Machinga (45.20%), Nsanje (47.67%o), Thyolo (48.01%), Lilongwe City (48.33%) Zomba Rural (49.62%), Blantyre Rural (51.40%), Chikwawa (51.64%) Lilongwe Rural East (51.65%), Rumphi (51.73%) and Balaka (52.5)

The performance of Education Divisions, in descending order is as follows :

North (58.08%), Central East (57.32%), Shire Highlands (54.08%), Central West (52.79%) South East (52.74%) and South West (52.37%].

The top ten (10) schools based on percentage of candidates with distinctions, in descending order are :

Marist Pvt Secondary (52.58%),
St Kizito Secondary (45.83%), Mtendere Secondary (40.50%), Nankhunda Seminary (38.436), St. Mary’s Secondary (37.92%),
St. Patrick’s Seminary (36.73%), Dedza Secondary (35.16%), Pius XII Seminary (34.47%), Loyola Jesuit Secondary (31.40%) and Likuni Boys Secondary (30.71%).

The schools with 0% pass rate are :

Phembe CDSS (Mzimba South), Chaboli CDss (Mzimba North), Real Park Pvt (Neno), Chivumbe CDSS
(Blantyre R), Phonics Pvt (Karonga) and Mbongozi cDSS (Kasungu).

Points to Notes

  • Candidates should access their results at the centres where they registered for the examination
  • All candidates who wish to query their results should do so in writing through their heads of school.
  • All queries should reach MANEB by 31st October 2023. After this date no further queries will be considered.
  • MANEB will not consider any query about the results made directly to the Board by candidates or any other individual
